Special to The Republican

Some people say wrestling meets are won in the consolation rounds and that couldn’t have been anymore correct for the Dean Tech Eagles, who won the Division III Western Massachusetts Sectional Meet at Monument Mountain Regional High School in Great Barrington on Saturday with a score of 172.50, while Hampshire came in second with 149 points and Mount Greylock came in third with 144.

Dean Tech clinched the win in the 152-pound consolation finals when Justin Perez won third place after Mount Greylock’s David Obrien couldn’t finish the match because of injury.

“It’s crazy,” Perez said of the victory. “We won two matches in this weight class last year and this year I take third? It feels amazing.”

That question was asked before the sophomore was informed that his victory clinched the first ever WMass wrestling title for the city of Holyoke. He couldn’t articulate a reaction to that one. Dean Tech coach Joe Griffin had a little bit more to say about the victory.

“I’m honestly the proudest coach in the world right now,” he said. “Every kid helped out, every kid from our first-year varsity kids to our seniors. Proud doesn’t do [the feeling] justice, it really doesn’t.”

HOLYOKE — Mayor Alex Morse benefitted from having a mentor and he thinks others young people from the Paper City could benefit as well.

Morse announced a proclamation that made January in Holyoke as “Mentoring Month” at a press conference on Jan. 28 at Holyoke Health Center that focused on several mentoring programs that are already operating in the city as part of Mass Mentoring Partnership (MMP), a statewide organization.
Eileen Cavanaugh, the executive director of the Boys and Girls Club referenced the pilot program her organization is running with students from William Dean Technical High School in conjunction with the Holyoke Health Center (HHC) as an example. The Dean Tech Career Pathways Mentoring Program matches students who are in the health careers program at Dean Tech and places them with mentors from HHC.

HOLYOKE — Holyoke Youth Football players, cheerleaders and families celebrated the end of the 2012 football season at Dean Technical High School recently.

More than 300 people attended the banquet on Nov. 8 to congratulate the players and cheerleaders, who are in grades two to eight, on a “spectacular” run in the Suburban Amateur Football League, said Mark A. Lubold, Holyoke Youth Football president.

Peewee and senior football teams made the Super Bowl and the junior team went undefeated in the regular season, he said.

“It was hard fought season and the kids can all be proud of their effort and sportsmanship,” Lubold said.

Dean students in the culinary arts program run by Marty Fullwood cooked up more than 80 pounds of meatballs, pasta, salad, homemade rolls and cake for the event, he said.

“The kids cooked all day and some stayed late to help us serve the kids and their families,” Fullwood said. “It was a great Holyoke event.”
